What can you do in an hour that will save someone's life? That you can do lying down, chatting and get a chocolate biscuit for doing it? That's right, donating blood. Was it the choccie biccy that gave it away? I went today and gave my 10th donation...I got a little badge and a certificate. Just for 10 pints of blood and a few hours of my time. I am disproportionately proud of this little badge.
Whenever I talk about giving blood, people always talk about the needles ('oh I hate needles'), but that's an irrelevance to anyone who actually gives blood. I don't like needles either, I get really nervous when the needle is about to go in...but it doesn't hurt. Giving blood FEELS GOOD. They have a sticker that says 'I did something good today - I gave blood'. It is a good thing to do.
Giving blood could help someone live...a leukemia patient, a car accident victim, someone having an operation, someone giving birth. From kids to grandparents, lots of people can benefit. Neither of my parents can now give blood because of their health. Both of them wish they still could. Honestly, the needles don't matter! I feel good today, because I did something good. I got a badge and a certificate AND a chocolate biscuit for saving a life.
And then I got home and found this in my e-mail inbox:
“If you want to be happy for an hour - take a nap.
If you want to be happy for a day — go fishing.
If you want to be happy for a month — get married.
If you want to be happy for a year — inherit a fortune.
If you want to be happy for a lifetime — help others. ”
— Old Chinese Proverb
Do something good today - visit the national blood service website, and go give blood. It's one way to a happy life.
Love
